Built in 1897, The Dineen Building was originally the office, showroom and workshop for W&F Dineen Company, a prominent hat and fur company in Toronto. It was designed by F.H. Herbert. He also designed the Wellesley Street house of Henry Gooderham and the Palace Hotel at King St. and Strachan Ave. Herbert was known for his Richardson Romanesque houses found throughout the Annex, Parkdale and Rosedale. The Dineen Building was designed in the Renaissance Revival style.
Some of the unique features of the building included bronze and aluminum plates in the ceiling and a Sprague automatic elevator-the first of its kind in Canada. As part of the restoration 5 floors were opened up to reveal the original pillars.
After its restoration, the Dineen Building, located on the north west corner of Temperance St and Yonge St, won the prestigious AOC award. No surprise, considering it has been winning the hearts and minds of locals since it was built over a century ago.
Ridley Windows and Doors were brought in by developer Clayton Smith to lend their expertise in the undertaking of bringing this Grande Dame back to its original splendour. It was a unique project whereby the heritage façade was maintained and complemented by a modern addition to the building. The building is now home to some delicious retail space, including the famous Chase restaurant.
